Whilst all pimples are pesky, blackheads are incredibly frustrating. These tiny, plentiful little black dots inside the skin may seem impossible to remove. You may have been wondering how to rid yourself of blackheads since you were a teenager, and that likely includes some questionable removable methods. Perhaps you squeezed them or immediately covered them with a pore strip. If you have, you aren't alone, as these are common, popular practices for blemishes, but are they the best for your skin?
Avoid using pore strips, as even though they can effectively remove blackheads, they rip blackheads from the skin, which can cause damage. Using extraction tools at home is also not a good idea as they can be harsh, and you risk damaging the skin, causing infection and enlarged pores, which can leave your skin more susceptible to future breakouts. Another removal method to avoid is squeezing, as that may push the blackhead deeper or cause scarring that can lead to larger pores or risk of infection from bacteria entering the area from your hands.
How to Prevent Blackheads?
The best way to prevent blackheads is to prevent the follicles from becoming blocked in the first place. The easiest way to do this is to ensure you wash your face daily with a quality face wash in the morning and before bed to effectively remove dirt, oil, and impurities that may lead to breakouts. In addition to a quality face wash, some ingredients can help you prevent and treat blackheads without damaging your skin.
Salicylic Acid
If you have blackheads, your go-to ingredient should be salicylic acid—a type of beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that helps remove excess oil and exfoliate the cells from the skin's surface. Look for a gentle salicylic acid cleanser to lather away extra oil, shine, dirt, and grime. A salicylic acid cleanser gently exfoliates dead skin that can clog pores, leading to breakouts.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid
AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids are also effective for treating blackheads—look for glycolic and lactic acids. AHAs promote skin shedding and exfoliation (much like salicylic acid) by polishing away dead skin on the surface. Lactic acid is one of the most gentle chemical exfoliators since it rehydrates as it goes.
Retinol
Whilst it may seem like retinol only works on wrinkles, it can also help with stubborn blackheads. Retinoids can help treat blackheads and clogged pores by un-sticking skin cells so they can lift away easily without becoming blocked. Retinol also speeds up cell renewal, making it effective at unclogging pores. Adding retinol into your skincare regimen can transform your skin, helping keep blackheads at bay.
Stick to Your Skincare Routine
Skincare practices play a significant role in the duration of a blackhead. General cleanliness, decreasing the amount of sebum on the skin, and using effective, quality products can minimise the formation and help eliminate existing blackheads.
Blackheads naturally reform every 20 to 40 days, so consistency is critical to staying on top of the problem. Make exfoliation and moisturising a part of your routine, and then expand with products that boost confidence, like a lip enhancement complex that hydrates and replenishes your lips to make them look naturally full.
